Chess and Wooden Chess Pieces – a Fascinating World of Mind Games

Chess is a game that resembles war. The different chess pieces resemble the different hierarchy of officials going to war or ruling the country. Chess pieces are the rank and file of a chess game. They are arranged as if they were going to war. Chess pieces are the heart and soul of the game. Pierre Mac Orlan, the famous French poet and writer once said that there are more adventures on a chessboard than on all the seas of the world.

There are one thousand and forty possible legal chess positions and an average chess piece position can have as many as two hundred and eighteen moves. The result, the number of chess piece positions, is a mind- boggling permutation and combination. These can only be fathomed by supercomputers like Deep Blue and International grandmasters like Gary Kasparov or Viswanathan Anand. These positions offer a mind-boggling array of moves. The wonderful and varied environment of chess can be experienced through the value and purpose of the chess pieces.

Different chess pieces have different functions. The king has limited yet skilled movement possibilities and has always had a defensive role in the chess game. The King has always been an object of security and defense rather than one of attack or offence. The queen is also known as the general or Mantri. The Queen is one of the chess pieces that do not have as long- reaching moves as the king. However, the movement options are equally skillful. The Knight’s special ability lies in its flanking ability to lead the charge. The Bishop is suitable for play and a decisive piece in the game to play from mid- game onwards. The pawns form the players’ line to approach suggesting the offensive style of play as well as the defensive approach. The rook was mainly meant for defense and pinning down the opponent’s chess pieces. The rook has great linear movement capabilities but is susceptible to diagonal attack.

Chess sets come in a variety of shapes, materials and colors. For instance, there are the Staunton Wooden chess sets, which are twenty-one inch wooden chess sets, suitable for competitions, as well as for playing at home for leisure. The Drueke wooden chess set is ideal to be offered as a gift to someone who is fascinated with the game, either for playing at home or for playing in a competition. The majority of high quality wooden chess sets are made of walnut. The hardwood is very beautiful to look at. In these beautiful wooden chess sets, there are wonderfully matched rosewood chess piece, which are equally beautiful. There are wonderful chess sets that are handcrafted in the Staunton style. These wooden chess sets come in a variety of materials, such as ebony, rosewood or other fine woods. Moreover, There are boxwood wooden chess sets, which are also wonderful to look at and play with. They are suitable for both tournaments and leisure. These wooden chess sets are high end. There are ebony wood chess sets that are heavily weighted with 3.0” and 4.0” kings and come in four styles. There are other types of chess pieces too, such as the kind made of rosewood and red sandalwood.

Simple Ways to Sand a Wooden Floor

Hard wood floors lose their luster with time. There are different ways of refurbishing your wooden floor. But before sanding your floor, sweep it completely and if it needs mopping, do not use water but an ideal cleaning solution. Use wood putty to fill up the gaps and dents and allow it to dry before you begin to sand the surface. HSS.com advises you to remember that wooden flooring is thin and if you sand it too much, then you will reach the subfloor and consequently, you might be required to replace the boards. You can also make use of suitable covers on the scratches and allow it to blend after you apply the first coat. Apply the second coat after it dries.

You should as well remember to repair the warped and broken boards. When you replace new boards, sand them until you reach the level of the rest of the boards. Make use of a hand sander from HSS.com and cloth for cleaning the dust from the sanding. You can satin the new boards where they are not stained with the original color stain. Ensure that you only make use of oil based stains. Apply it with the disposable kind paintbrush.

When you are done repairing all the dents and scratches, you should lease a buffer from HSS.com. Make use of wool from lamb to buff the wooden floor to give it a shine. You should also go ahead and sweep or vacuum the flooring to remove any underlying dirt. Use water based finish on the floor. You can then use a foam paintbrush. Ensure that you start at the house corners and always try to work in small portions. Each time, allow it to dry for 24 hours. Sand off any grain that is out of place and use a cloth to wipe the dirt. Lastly, you can then apply the final coat and let it dry.

Wooden Toys Present a Generational Charm

Today kids are obsessed with hand held video games and signature TV dolls, but you may find yourself longing for the old wooden toys of the past. After all, it is hard to see your children passing on a video game to their children telling them this is a cherished family heirloom. If you want to create memories in your house that can be passed on generation from generation you may want to begin by thinking back to your favorite childhood wooden toys.

More likely than not, when you think of your childhood the wooden toys that come to mind belonged on an antique train track, or perhaps wooden building blocks. If you purchase wooden toys that were made with passion and integrity, you can expect the wooden toys to last long into the years when your first grandchildren begin visiting the house.

Thus, not only will you enjoy building log cabins with wooden toys that are blocks, but your children can, and their children will as well. It is odd to think of wooden toys as novelty items, but in today’s age, you may find you appeal to children just because you own these old ancient mosaics!

Imagine that, your house might be the hit of the block because it is the only one that has purely hand crafted wooden toys like a train engine desk! In fact, you may soon find that other parents want to know where you purchased your wooden toys from because their children were so captivated by them!

For family time, or other times, wooden toys such as board games are also a great deal of fun that everyone in the family can enjoy. Checkers and Chinese checkers are just a few of the games that will catch you and your children’s eyes when they are crafted purely out of wood.

What is more, your children and grandchildren will not only enjoy the wooden toys while they are young. They will also form memories that last well into the future. You will hear them, after they are grownup, reminiscing about the times they spent at your home, playing with wooden blocks building towers, houses, or farms. They may be nostalgic for the days when they were carefree and had nothing more to worry about than how long they could make their wooden train.

The good thing about memories of wooden toys is that the objects of the memories will last so that your children and grandchildren can take them out and relive those old times. They can share their memories with their own children. They might even decide to buy more wooden toys to add to the collection.

After all, your family can never have too many wooden toys. They will always be appreciated, and you can pass them down to different branches of the family if there are too many for your direct line. It is a gift of love to share something that makes people so happy. It is also a gift for yourself to have the wooden toys in your own family to brighten up your lives.

Scouring for the Best Types of Wooden Doors

Are you ready to shop for your wooden doors? Just when you thought that your choices are so limited, there are actually a lot of them that you can find in the market. They don’t only vary in terms of design and color but also of the type of wood that they are made of.

When you’re shopping for wooden doors, it would be best if you select those that are composed of solid wood. They can be very heavy and expensive, but they are also very durable. They don’t easily give in to wear and tear, most especially if their panels are made up of fiberboards. This way, they won’t expand and contract every time the weather changes.

Kinds of Solid Wood

For your wooden doors, you can choose any of the following solid hardwoods below:

Hickory

A wooden door that is made of hickory is sure to be very durable. After all, hickories have survived 50 million years. But you can also expect your door to be very heavy. The good thing about them is that there are a variety of textures that you can choose from. For example, their grain can either be wavy or straight. Moreover, when you want to change the finish of your hickory wooden doors, it will be very easy. This is because they are also extremely easy to sand and finished. Your finish can range from medium to dark.

Ash

Another popular type of wooden doors is ash. They may not be as strong as hickory, but they are shock resistant. It doesn’t matter how many times you get to bang the door or apply any kind of pressure to the door. It will still remain very strong. The strength of the wooden door will be according to its total weight.

Cedar

Cedar wooden doors are known for their natural beauty. They can range from deep brown to red or even honey beige. They also look very elegant and classy, which can be perfect for grand or rustic-style homes. Most of all, they are very stable. They don’t easily suffer from warping or twisting, which normally happens when the wood starts to contract or expand. They don’t also easily absorb water, which means that they don’t get easily damaged because of high moisture content.

Pine

There are countless types of pines, so you know that there are a wide variety of wooden doors that you can select. Moreover, they tend to grow very fast, which means that they are enough or excessive production of them. This then lowers the cost of production. You can look forward to great savings if you buy pine wood doors. Pines are also very convenient to pain and finish.

Maple

There are two common kinds of maple. You can have the hard maple and the soft maple. A number of wood doors are made of the latter. But don’t be fooled of their name. They can be very hard, almost similar to the cherry woods. Their colors can be between light brown and dark red. They are a favorite for those who are building rustic homes or log cabins. They give off cozy atmosphere.
