Kyoto: The mysteries of Japan’s ancient city with Rudy Maxa

The spiritual heart of Japan, Kyoto offers a glimpse of Japanese life as it used to be, primarily because it was never bombed during World War II. Tiny streets with wooden homes, impressive temples, and a dedication to ancient Japanese traditions make Kyoto one of Japan’s most visited cities.

P13 New Quake in Chile

Chili Quake Nueva réplica de 7.2 sacude Chile durante investidura de Piñera A week later, some Chile quake surivors wait for aid By Terry Wade and Fabian Cambero, Reuters CONCEPCION, Chile — Some survivors were still waiting for government aid on Saturday in south-central Chile, a week after one of the strongest earthquakes on record killed hundreds and repeated aftershocks rattled nerves. Homeless and desperate, they voiced anger and frustration at outgoing President Michelle Bachelet’s handling of the disaster, saying her administration was too slow to mobilize after the 8.8-magnitude quake struck early on Feb. 27. “There has been an earthquake of disorganization on the part of the national and local governments,” said Fernando Valenzuela, 44, who is living with his wife in a tent city of 42 in the small town of Dichato, near the quake epicenter. “This is a case of bad governmental management and organization … 99 percent of the help we have got has been from the Chilean people, and only 1 percent from the government,” he added as others cooked meals over open fires. The area around Dichato was devastated by tsunamis triggered by the quake, which washed large ships as far as 1.2 miles (2 km) inland. Wooden homes splintered like matchsticks and crushed cars sat at odd angles amid debris. Cargo planes have landed around 19 miles (30 km) away with water, food and bedding, but aid had yet to reach some tent cities. Many outraged survivors say they were not warned of the

Ancient City of the Minorities: Old Town of Lijiang

Lijiang is in the northwest of Yunnan Province, China. The town stretches across a plain 2400 metres above sea level. The Old City is lined with beautiful tile-roofed houses. The wooden homes and flag-stoned pavements are reminiscent of Tang and Song styles. Several minority ethnic groups live here. Approximately 70% of the 300000 population are Naxis: the town was built and developed by the Naxi people. Lijiang has numerous tea houses. The town flourished as a trading post of the Silk Road of tea, known as the Tea-Horse Ancient Path. Merchants would travel from far and wide with their horses loaded with tea. The city has a complex water-supply system. The Jade Dragon River stemming from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) diverges into numerous small waterways providing water to all areas of the town. The water in the upper part of the river on the right is for drinking. The Spring water tastes good, and attracts people each day. People scrub the dirt off their vegetables in the middle part of the river. While clothes are washed further downstream. Different parts of the river have different functions: hence the name Three-eyed Well. A unique Lijian character. At the foot of the bridge is a slot where a board can be placed to dam the waterway. This method has been in practice since the Ming Dynasty. In this festival, an elder reads out a scripture praying for the peace and well-being of the Naxi people. The scripture is written in Dongba pictograph. It was

dj Ocean – Mind Bogglin’ (twisted dance craze)

THIS IS PAINFUL TO ME pure smiles used to roam on this land when rice fields were young and healthy and the gumamela flowers fenced our wooden homes. strangers were welcome to have a drink and eat colored rice cake. vagees and fruits were often free and shared by neighbors. country folks seldom got hungry. our lives were simple and happy. as happy as our ricefields. and then our town mayor visited the farm lands… and he saw something that we never noticed. PROGRESS… that was what he called it. he bought the land with his smile and guns… cheaply. he then doubled its price and sold it to what he called PROGRESS. now most of our rice fields are concrete spaces; cradles of factories that color our air red and black; nest of modern houses and golf courses that we can’t even affored. and our mayor is smiling because he is the richest man in our province. he is not our mayor anymore but his son is. religious ministers supported our former mayor and now he is our governor. now there is aa food crisis in our country. because the story of our town’s rice field is also the story of our country. rice fields, just like reason, and justice, and love are gone… and i can say now that there is no more poor in my country because the poor people here are invisible they are not heard… they are not seen… they are nothing they eat rat and nobody notices. they eat spoiled leftovers and never seen they die in hunger and no one cares evola wonder?

Akyaka – Part2 – www.marmarispass.com

Splendid beaches, pristine waters, striking scenery, and award-winning architecture—all in one lovely package. The Gökova Bay is also a popular stopover for boat cruises, while the alluvial plain stretching to the sea is extremely fertile farming land. The region offers an abundance of opportunities for nature walks and bird-watching, as well as activities such as horseback riding, paintball, or go kart. The wooden homes in the Akyaka area are especially a sight to see, built in the style traditional of Ula, another town further north. The home built by the late Nail Çakırhan earned the architect the Aga Khan Architecture Award, and is open to the public during high season. And watching the sun go down in the area is truly breathtaking; if you get the chance, make sure you do!

Sign of progress in Tokyo

This footage was taken in Meijiro, Tokyo on Feb 17, 2007. Concrete construction is a daily occurence around these parts. Traditional wooden homes are constantly being torn down to make way for lucrative concrete apartments. Sign of progress??? Perhaps a sign of something else…

Istanbul 7 Bosphorus boat ride

Now it is time to reward yourself with the most pleasant out-of-town diversion — a ferry ride on the Bosphorus, the strategic waterway that divides Asia and Europe. This excursion offers beautiful views of palaces and villages along the waterfront and a wonderful choice of fish restaurants in one of three villages on the north end near the Black Sea, Sariyer, Rumeli Kavagi or Anadolu Kavagi. It takes about 2 hours to get to the end of the line, 3 hours for a meal, and 2 hours to return the same way. You could shorten the ride by turning around sooner and just buying a snack on board, but the fish restaurants at the various stops are world-famous. Organized tours can make all the arrangements, but it is easy and much cheaper to do on your own. Bosphorus ferries leave from the dock at Eminonu, by the Spice Market and Sirkeci Railway Station. An alternative trip to Princess Islands by hydrofoil is also available at the Galata Bridge end of the dock. The ferry terminal is a busy area where you can feel the pulse of the city, especially at rush hour when thousands of locals are walking between here and work. To find the Bosphorus ferry, look for Pier 3 and the sign that says “Bogaz Hatti,” operated by the official Istanbul Sehir Hatlari Boats. Don’t let yourself be misguided by aggressive salesmen to one of the smaller boats alongside the commercial ferry, because this is another rip-off with a shorter cruise that takes longer. (Ferry departures are at 10:35a.m., 12:45p.m
