Tips for Remodeling a Small Kitchen
Remodeling a kitchen can be exciting, but it can also be intimating. Few rooms in a house are more utilitarian in function; you need sinks, appliances large and small, drawers and cabinets. You must plan storage space, work space, cooking space, and equipment to help you prepare, cook and clean up the food. If you are remodeling a small kitchen, the challenges multiply because you simply don’t have any space to waste. You need to learn how to be efficient and how to prioritize your needs.
The first tip is to choose multi-function storage and appliances for your remodel. Look for racks and cabinets that will allow you to use every inch of space you have, including corners. Choose cabinets that will go all the way to the ceiling and appliances that can perform more than one function. When it comes to appliances, there are usually compact models, or models made to fit into odd spaces. Look first at these and don’t purchase anything larger than what you absolutely need.
Try to store things in the most efficient manner possible. For instance, cutting boards and trays can be placed upright to slide and in and out. Small racks can help you organize spices in a way that is tidy and makes the most of a small cabinet. Dividers and trays can help you remain organized in a small space while still storing as many things as possible.
Finally, think carefully about what you really need. Don’t build in a wine rack unless you really keep enough bottles of wine to justify it. A convection oven may sound very appealing, but will you actually use it? Dispose of appliances that get small use, or consider purchasing new ones that can perform a number of tasks or which simply take up less space. Save your space for the things you really love and really use.
